Any of the major supermarkets in the area offer a wide variety of imported goods for those looking for more familiar cuisine.

With Bob, we talk about the perks of relocating to Chiang Mai and the benefits that come with living here. Bob tells us a little bit about the retiree community and also the different ways of getting around this beautiful city. We also dive into the details of healthcare and insurance in Thailand.

How to Enter Thailand in 2021

Hey friends, thanks for stopping by our channel. My name's Amanda Gedney, and I'm the founder and CEO of Settle in Abroad. Today, we're talking about what it takes to enter Thailand in 2021 as borders are still closed.

(00:20)

In the past couple months, there have been new visa options that may allow you to enter Thailand that you didn't even know about. So now many countries can get the 60 day tourist visa, the 45 day visa exemption. These are all possible and ways to enter Thailand with a little bit less paperwork. But first, let's talk about the process.

(00:42):

So, number one, you have to decide which visa that you want. Are you going to get a long-term visa from your home country and enter Thailand? Or are you going to get the short-term visa and then get the long-term visa in Thailand? So there's a few things you can think about. If the specific reason you're coming to Thailand is for, say retirement, you may want to get the retirement visa in America, because then you can get that retirement visa and be in Thailand for a year, and then extend that in the country and not worry about anything at all. However, there is a lot of paperwork you have to do on your end in your home country to get this visa, but we are able to help you throughout the entire process. So please schedule a consultation call with us and we can help you decide what your options are and maybe what might be the best situation for you.

(01:32):

Because you've been waiting to come to Thailand, and if you just want to get that visa and then sit on a beach for a year, that's great. We can help you with that. But if you don't want to get a long-term visa outside of Thailand because you want to just get Thailand quicker and do less paperwork, that's fine. Then the 45 day visa exemption or the 60 day tourist visa, may be for you if it's possible for your country. Not every country can get these tourist visas at the moment, but we can let you know what visa you can get so you can enter Thailand no matter what country you are from.

(02:06):

So you have your visa, you decided on your visa, great. Next step, book your flight. So you have to book a semi-commercial flight because there are not commercial flights yet. So be very careful when booking your flight, because you cannot just go on Skyscanner or Google Flights and just book any flight, because the ones online might actually not be the ones that are available. Because it's semi-commercial, it's still technically a repatriation flight. So say you are in America and you're flying from Los Angeles to Bangkok. So Qatar Airways is one example. The flight from LA to Doha is not a commercial flight, but the flight from Doha to Bangkok is. So you have to look at the flight numbers to see if that is an actual semi-commercial flight. And there's spreadsheets online from the Thai government that let you know the airlines that are flying out and of course, this is something we can help with as well.

(03:08):

So you got your visa, you booked your flight, now you need to book your quarantine. So Thailand requires that everyone does a 15 night quarantine when arriving. This quarantine, most of them are in Bangkok. There's a few options in Phuket and Pattaya, but they are quite expensive and it's most likely that your flight might be canceled. Because wherever your flight arrives in to Thailand, that's where you immediately have to quarantine. So most people are doing Bangkok because most flights are flying directly there and it's much more options. There's a quarantine for every budget. The lowest possible is starting at $1,000 per person. And one thing to know about the quarantine is that only if you're married and have children is when you can quarantine together. So two partners that are not married, unfortunately they will not be able to quarantine in the same room. And for families, depending on the quarantine, sometimes they require one parent with one kid, one parent with another kid in separate rooms.

(04:12):

However, there are some luxury quarantine options for families that have conjoining rooms, so that might be an option for you. So as well, we can help you book the quarantine. We've had many clients come through and move to Thailand, so we've gotten a lot of feedback and everyone has a different opinion about the quarantine, but mostly everyone is happy with it. The food's great and it was just two weeks and now they get to live their life in Thailand. So you need to book that quarantine directly with the hotel as well. Do not book it through Agoda or booking.com. You have to book it directly with the hotel because they have their own cancellation policies that are very important. And you do want to pick one with a flexible cancellation policy in case your flight gets canceled, in case something happens in the paperwork process, you don't want to lose all that money you paid for the quarantine.

(05:06):

So visa, you got your quarantine, your flight, and now some more paperwork. So the COE, the certificate of entry, so you need to show that you've booked your quarantine, that you've booked your flight and you have your visa and you have to upload it online. So first you get a pre-approval for the COE and that can come within 24 hours of you applying. And just be sure to do this on a business day, because it's most likely able to come faster. So you will be pre-approved and then you have to do the next COE, which could take up to five business days to be approved. So be sure to give yourself enough time. And in both COE's, you also have to provide COVID insurance covering 100,000 USD. So don't book any insurance that just covers 100,000 USD.

(06:00):

It has to specifically cover COVID. They want to see that it says covers COVID. And the government has a list of Thai companies that fit in this policy requirement and I would highly suggest using a Thai company so you don't have any issues. If you use a Thai company and they list it, the Thai insurance company will know exactly what you need and you won't have any problems. And we work with plenty of insurance providers that we can help you get the insurance that you need. That insurance is required that you have it for the length of your visa, so if you're entering on a 45 day visa exemption, you just need the COVID insurance for 45 days. But if you are entering on a one-year retirement visa, you would have to have that COVID insurance for the entire year. So that's a very important detail to be aware of. So yeah, all of this paperwork is required. The COE is very important.

(06:54):

And then once your COE is approved, the final step is 72 hours before your flight you have to get a COVID test and it's a very specific COVID test. We'll write the exact wording so you understand. If you get a different one than the exact wording that they want, then it will not be valid. So you have to be very careful and make sure that it's within the 72 hour window before your flight. Because if it's anything out of that, they're not going to let you board the plane. And you did all the work, all the paperwork before those 72 hours, the last thing is the COVID test and the Fit-to-Fly Certificate. And the Fit-to-Fly Certificate you can only get filled out after you have your COVID test result. And of course the COVID test result has to be negative. And for the Fit-to-Fly Certificate, it is pretty simple. There are doctors online. It's like a video call and some aren't even requiring the video call anymore. You just email someone, you give them your negative COVID test, they make the paper for you, and then that's your Fit-to-Fly Certificate.

(08:02):

So there are specific doctors online that are qualified to do this. And of course, this is something we can help with as well. Because at the end of the day, it is a lot of paperwork to enter Thailand right now and you want it done correctly the first time, because one slight detail off might make your COE not come in time, you might not be able to get on your flight and it will leave you frustrated. So if you work with us, we're here to make the process as calm and simple as possible, and to get your end goal to enter Thailand. That's the goal. There's a lot of paperwork in between that, but we'll get you to Thailand so you can enjoy your life and relax. So thanks so much for stopping by our channel, and I hope to see you next time. Remember if you're new, hit subscribe, give us a like, hit the bell to be notified every time we upload videos. And we'll see you again soon. Thank you.

Cooking an Easy Pad Thai with a Local in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Nancy, the owner of Siam Cooking School located in Pongnoi, a neighborhood just 10 minutes outside the ever popular Nimman area, has shared with us her special Pad Thai recipe. She’s owned this cooking school for 16 years and has loved cooking Thai food for all of her life.

Nancy’s Pad Thai Recipe for 2

Ingredients:

1 egg

1/4 cup of chopped garlic

1/4 cup of Tofu

1/4 cup of Vegetable or Soybean Oil

8 or 12 ounce package of rice noodles

1/4 cup pickled cabbage

1 cup of chicken breast

Pad Thai Sauce (1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup oyster sauce, 1/4 cup tamarind sauce, 1 table spoon sugar)

1 cup bean sprouts

1/4 cup of dried shrimp

1/2 cup of crushed peanuts

Amanda0309-72.JPG

The whole cooking process should take about 5 minutes. We are using fresh rice noodles in the video, so we suggest boiling store bought rice noodles before mixing in the pan.

1. First, put the oil in the plan and let simmer until hot.

2. Next, add tofu, stir for 30 seconds and then add chicken

3. Add garlic

4. Crack the egg in the pan, add picked cabbage, and dried shrimp

5. Add the noodles

6. Add the sauce

7. Mix the sauce, noodles and ingredients for about one minute

8. Your pad thai is cooked!

9. Finally, add bean sprouts, spring onion, and peanuts for garnish

We Have the Perfect Visa for you to Live in Thailand Long Term

We hope you're healthy and safe wherever you may be in this world.

Thailand has handled COVID-19 very well. There hasn’t been a new country wide case in the past two months. How to Pass the VIPKID Interview Process

VIPKID.jpg

Congratulations on passing your Demo Interview! If you missed our last post on helpful resources for the basic info section and demo, feel free to have a read here. Now for the next stages of the interview process.

These are the main rules they are grading you on when you apply to be a VIPKID teacher. Here’s a very helpful video explaining the entire interview process.

No.1: BE ON TIME

You may not think you will miss class, you may forget check your schedule while it is still new to you or you may be a few minutes late. However, an online class is only 25 minutes, so being late just a few minutes, means you likely won’t get through the class, and may receive a No Show record.

No.2: BE PROFESSIONAL

Ensure your background is clean, your lighting is excellent, and you have no issues with your IT connection. has no issues and provides your students with the most appropriate environment for them to learn effectively.

No.3: BE ACTIVE

You are going to teach young children in another country thousands miles away through a camera, it’s so important for you to keep high energy levels for every class to engage your students and bring an interesting lesson to your lovely students!

MOCK CLASS 1:

Now, on to Mock Class 1. You have to teach a lesson to a veteran VIPKID teacher. The teacher pretends to be a young student, while you teach them the class. Almost everyone does two mock classes, but if you do really well on your first one, you may not have to do another one! You will also need to choose if you would like to get certified as a Lower level teacher, Level 2-3 Certification or an upper level, 4-5. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to prepare for your interview. The proctor will know right away if you haven’t prepared the material well enough ahead of time. VIPKID’s teaching techniques are very specific and can be learned all on YouTube.

The best part of VIPKID is that you don’t have to lesson plan! The lessons are provided for you and each student is on their own pace in the curriculum. You have access to the slides before you teach, so in the beginning you’ll definitely want to look over them before getting in the classroom. The longer you teach, the more lessons you will teach and it will all get easier! It takes a bit of time for every teacher to get in their own specific teaching rhythm, so just be patient and it will all get easier!

Here are some helpful videos for the Level 2-3 Certification and the Level 4-5 Certification

MOCK CLASS 2:

Congratulations on passing Mock Class 1! Now onto Mock Class 2 where the most important aspect is showing off your new skills. Be sure to take the advice from any of the feedback you got from the veteran teacher. They expect you to take the feedback and implement into your teaching, so make sure you take it seriously!

Here are some helpful videos for your Mock Class 2. Level 2-3 Certification and Level 4-5 Certification.

TESOL CERTIFICATION:

VIPKID now requires all teachers to have a TESOL Certification as it is a requirement by the Chinese government. If you already have a TEFL or TESOL from another accredited company, that qualifies. They say it takes 10 hours to complete the certification, but most people get through it in 2-4 hours max.

Once you complete the TESOL, you’ll fill out your contract info and VIPKID does a background check on you, which takes a few days.

The whole hiring process takes a week to a week and a half. VIPKID prefers that you do it all quickly. Keep your momentum going and get hired quickly!

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

The VIPKID attendance policy is VERY STRICT. This is completely reasonable as it’s a job where you make your own hours, so if you open a slot, you are expected to be there. You are only allowed 6 “No Shows” per teaching contract. Your contract lasts 6 months. A “No Show” is given when you are more than 1 minute late to class. This is the worst class labeling because it goes on your record and you are required to pay for that class. You do not get paid, and you have to pay your base rate, which gets deducted from your monthly payment.

So long story short, AVOID NO SHOWS in all cases possible! VIPKID does understand that emergencies happen, so they have “soft cancellations” but those require doctor’s notes. Another finished class labeling that you want to avoid is “Teacher IT issue.” VIPKID has "firemen” which are their IT specialists there to help in case there are teacher or student IT issues in class. The best way to avoid IT issues is make sure your WIFI is at a fast speed and if there are any power outages or issues, to have your mobile hot spot ready. If you’ve never used your mobile hot spot before, it’s easy. You are able to use the data from your phone, to connect to your laptop. You don’t want to do this all the time, in case you don’t have much data on your phone, but it’s great for traveling and power outage situations. Here’s a quick video on using a hot spot for iPhone and Android.

AFTER YOU’RE HIRED:

The number one mistake that VIPKID teachers make, is missing their first class. VIPKID emails you A LOT throughout the interview process and when you’re a teacher, but they don’t email you when your classes get booked or anything like that. So make sure to check back often to see which slots got booked and download the VIPKID app. An alarm goes off 15 minutes before your class starts.

Please use my referral link or Code (AMAND0043). I am more than happy to help you through the interview process. Feel free to share this article, comment below or email info@settleinabroad.com with any questions.

Good luck on your mock classes!

How to Have That Flexible Job You've Always Wanted

vipkid 2.png

Here’s a post from our CEO, Amanda, on how teaching online is an amazing opportunity to make money while you’re teaching in Thailand, trying to save money for your travels, paying your bills, or replacing a job that may have not given you the freedom you’ve always wanted. It truly is a flexible, rewarding and enjoyable way to make money.

VIPKID is an online teaching and education company. Their headquarters are located in Beijing. They have their own platform and app for Native English Speakers from the US or Canada to teach English one on to one to Chinese students ages 4-16. You must have a Bachelor’s Degree to be qualified for the position, but it can be in any subject. It is not imperative that you have teaching experience for this. If you have had any experience with kids, such as babysitting, being a camp counselor or tutoring, that is relevant enough to be hired. If you’re interested in signing up, please use my referral link and I’m more than happy to help you with the interview process.

I’ve been a VIPKID teacher for three and a half years now, and it is the best job I’ve ever had. It’s really the dream to make your own schedule and make some great money while being flexible. When I was teaching at a school in Thailand, I would come home and teach a few hours a night to just have money for my travel fund, which allowed me to go to New Zealand an Australia for a month, which was a very expensive trip that I’d never thought I’d be able to take in my entire life. I am grateful for VIPKID once again, now that the travel industry will be down for at least a few months, so I am able to have a better peace of mind in paying my bills and planning for the future.

There is no minimum amount of hours you need to teach per week. In the beginning, you will want to open as many hours as possible to start getting students to book you. VIPKID is hiring now and there are even more hours than usual because the students in China are home as their schools are closed.

PAYMENT:

Each class is 25 minutes long. You have the opportunity to make $18-$22 an hour depending on your experience. In the beginning, you will most likely teach a different student every time, but after a few weeks, you will start to get “regulars” booking you and it’s a rewarding way to watch the progression of your students. The way VIPKID breaks down the payment of their classes can be confusing, but I will explain it to you here.

You will be told your “base pay” after your first mock class. If you don’t have any teaching experience or a teaching degree, you will most likely have a base pay of “$8.50” If the class is finished “As Scheduled” this means that you didn’t have any IT issues or weren’t late to class, you are given another $1. So you are at $9.50. If you teach at least 45 classes in the month, you get another $1. So your final payment per class for the month would be $10.50. If you open slots “last minute,” which means less than 24 hours before the class start, you are awarded an extra $2! So you could potentially make $11.50 a class, so $23 an hour.

VIPKID’s system and platform is very easy to use, and they take care of all of this for you. You have the option to get paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly via direct deposit. It’s pretty amazing. They are never late on payments and it is all completely legitimate. You occasionally even get paid early.

TIMING:

All you need to do is open time slots and students book you. The hours work on the Chinese time zone, and the “peak” hours are 5pm-9pm so in EST time that’s 6am-11am. Now that the students are still home, there are more hours in the morning and throughout the day. You could technically teach 13 classes a day, 6.5 hours, if you stayed up all night, but that is definitely not the sustainable approach to teaching, but if you need to do it, you could! In the beginning, make sure not to schedule too many classes in a row because teaching for 25 minutes may not seem long, but it requires your complete focus, so it definitely gets exhausting. I never teach more than 5 in a row. I think 3 is the magic number, but times when I’m hustling I’ll do 4-5 in a row with an hour break and do another 2 or 3 in a row. The months I’ve made the most money, were the times I taught 7-10 classes a day. It really helped rack up the money fast. The amazing thing is you can always open a few slots, see how they book and then open more. Or open a lot all at once and check back often to see how they’re booking and close slots. It’s really amazing having the flexibility of making your schedule like this.

CLASSROOM SET UP:

VIPKID expects all their teachers to have a “classroom” set up. This looks different for every teacher. What they are looking for the most is that you have bright lighting. Especially during your interviews, this is very important. It is best to have an extra lamp on your desk or table. They want to make sure the students are able to clearly see you, as it is very important while learning a new language to be able to not only hear how the words are pronounced, but see as they’re spoken. You’re expected to have some sort of appropriate background, you could have a map of the world, a print out of the alphabet, or anything fun you can think of. They want to make sure your classroom is colorful and inviting to the student.

PROPS:

VIPKID expects that all teachers have props in their classroom. They want to see that you have a small whiteboard, some stuffed animals, puppets or anything else that may make the student smile and add to an interactive learning experience. It is very important to have props, be comfortable integrating them into the lesson and using them with excitement during your interviews.

TEACHING STYLE:

VIPKID has a very specific way on how they want their teachers to teach. They expect you to be VERY enthusiastic. This may be uncomfortable at first, but it is quite a fun learning process that may require you laughing at yourself a bit along the way. There are many amazing YouTube videos that help demonstrate the enthusiastic teaching style. VIPKID also has very specific “TPR” which is the body language that you must use when teaching certain aspects. These TPR moves are very important to learn before scheduling your interview. Here’s a great video that explains the teaching style.

INTERVIEW PROCESS:

The interview process is definitely tedious, but once it is complete, the job is very easy! I will break down the steps of the interview process. They have also made the process quicker and easier. You will have three interviews. The demo lesson, mock class one, and mock class two. Here are some YouTube videos that explain the hiring process in extreme detail.

DEMO:

For the demo lesson (the first interview) you have three options. We suggest the Smart Demo as it is the quickest and least time consuming option. There is a high success rate in passing when choosing to do the Smart Demo as well. Here are your three options below, so you can decide for yourself what may be best.

  1. Interview Live via the VIPKID platform with an employee at the headquarters in Beijing.

  2. Smart Demo - the shortest possible option, takes place on your Smartphone, you have to answer a quick 5 questions and you only need to record yourself teaching one slide. You have 2 ½ mins to teach it and you can re-record the video as many times as you’d like before submitting it.

  3. Recorded 5 minute demo - Teach a few slides and record yourself in the platform. This takes longer and has no benefit over the Smart Demo.

We hope you’ve been intrigued by the possibility of getting a very flexible remote job! Stay tuned for our next blog post this week about the detailed interview process. We will explain the necessary steps to pass all your interviews and become a VIPKID teacher! It is possible to get through the entire hiring process in a week to a week and a half.

How Long Should You Teach English Abroad?

april+2.jpg

Teaching English abroad is the perfect way to leave your corporate job behind and immerse yourself in a new culture and work environment. Teaching English abroad affects everyone differently, but it certainly changes lives. It changes the lives of the students, their families, and the other teachers you work with. It also will certainly change your life for the better. In ways that you will never know, until you try it out yourself. Many teachers plan on only teaching for six months, which turns into one year, and even three in the case of many Settle in Abroad teachers. We strongly believe that everyone should teach English (or their native language abroad) for at least one year of their life.

No matter how long you teach, you’ll always remember how it felt to be a teacher in Chiang Mai, Thailand. You’ll also never forget the names and faces of the students who you realize may have even taught you more than you could have ever expected.

We would not suggest teaching for less than 6 months. If you arrive during our April start date, you will sign a one year contract with the school. Most private schools do not have large penalties for not completing your contract, many teachers leave after one semester, but it will just be difficult to leave the students. Emergencies happen, teachers need to return to their home country, it is completely understood. But if you can control it, we encourage you to teach for a full year.

If you arrive in the end of September for our October start date, you will sign a contract for 6 months, until March. If you like the school you’re at, you most likely will have the opportunity to sign another contract with the school for the following year. This is great because you will then have March, April and mid May summer holiday! Travel your heart out! Many schools will also pay you in full during these two months off.

If you’re teaching at a private or government school in Chiang Mai, you teach about twenty hours per week depending on your exact contract. That means you teach about 3-4 hours per day. Most schools require that you be in the school from 7:45am - 4pm Monday - Friday. So that means you have plenty of time in your office on your laptop to work on any personal projects that you may have never had the time to do before. This is the perfect time to start that blog you’ve always wanted to or to kick start your freelance writing career.

You are required to plan your lessons during your non teaching hours, but once you get used to your school’s format and your own teaching rhythm, your lessons will get easier and easier to make.

When people reach out to us about getting teaching positions, their main concern is that they usually don’t have teaching experience. That is completely fine. It is helpful to have experience with children, so we encourage teachers to pick up a side job tutoring or do a summer camp before coming to Chiang Mai. In many cases that isn’t possible, so we train them to be teachers through the online TEFL we offer.

For teachers that are not comfortable with public speaking and are very worried about teaching in front of a class, we encourage them to do an in person TEFL. We are partnered with an amazing TEFL school in Chiang Mai. You will be a part of a three week course with about thirty other new teachers. You will learn the ins and outs of teaching English abroad and get real in class practice at a few different schools in the city.

Many skills learned while teaching abroad, surprisingly translate to future jobs and even boosts some people’s entrepreneurial spirits. If our founder, Amanda, never taught English in Chiang Mai, Settle in Abroad wouldn’t exist.

Don't Waste Your Money on an In-Person TEFL Course

shawn classroom.jpg

So you’ve decided to teach English abroad, but you don’t know where to begin. There are endless options of in person TEFLs and TESOLS as well as online TEFL courses ranging from 60 to 260 hours. We will give you the details of what is actually important and what schools are looking for when you teach English in Thailand.

Schools in Thailand want to see that you have a TEFL, whether you are a Native or Non Native English speaker. However, it is not very important to them where the TEFL is from. If you have a year before you come to Thailand, spend that time gaining some experience with children. Tutor at your local library or coach a soccer team. Anything that can add some teaching experience with children on your CV.

The only reason we suggest completing an in person TEFL course, is if you are terrified of teaching. If you are terrified of teaching, and going for it anyway, good for you, congrats, on stepping out of your comfort zone! An in person course, will give you some practice speaking in front of groups in a classroom. However, in our Teach in Chiang Mai Program, we offer a 120 hour online TEFL, where we help train you to lesson plan and learn about different student learning levels before you arrive in Thailand.

Through your completion of the online TEFL and our guidance, you will be prepared to teach your first class in Thailand. We prepare you to lesson plan using the standards in Chiang Mai private schools. We also prepare you for your demo lesson interviews and to understand the teaching job you’ve signed up for.

Through our Teach in Chiang Mai Program, you will get a teaching job in Chiang Mai, an apartment in a central location with the first month rent paid for, WIFI installation, airport pick up, Sim Card, motorbike rental free for one month, five tourist attractions and many more extras to make Chiang Mai your new home.

We don’t just “place” you in a job. We offer you at least three interviews so you can decide which school is right for you. Your apartment will be in a central location, but at the right price point for your salary as a teacher. Don’t waste your money over paying when you first arrive in Thailand. With our Teach in Chiang Mai Program you will be set up to be in the best case scenario possible.

Don’t do yourself a disservice by spending $1,500-$2,000 USD on an in person TEFL and finish the course without a teaching job. Most in person TEFL programs offer job placement, but take at least 5,000 ($150 USD) of your paycheck every month. We are here for you and ready to put you in the best position possible. Chiang Mai is the best city in Thailand to teach English. Don’t settle for anywhere else.

Reasons to Visit Pai, Thailand

Guest blog post alert! Check out one of our teacher alum, Kirsty Turner's, take on Pai, Thailand, where she has been living for many years.

The small town of Pai can be found nestled in the north of Thailand around a three hour drive from Chiang Mai. This is a popular place for travelers to chill out for a few days or even longer as the town is surrounded by stunning natural beauty in the form of lush mountains, flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, hot spring, pine forests and much more. Pai has a distinctly relaxed vibe and unwinding by the river while sipping a beer or two in the evening and listening to live music are among the most popular pastimes. Here are some other great things to see and do while spending time in Pai.

Mo Paeng Waterfall

This is the most accessible of Pai’s waterfalls and is located just seven kilometres from the town. The journey can be completed easily by motorbike and takes visitors through the countryside through several tiny villages. Entry to the waterfall is free of charge and the best time to visit is during the monsoon season when the water crashes over the rocks below and creates a fine spray.

Mae Yen Waterfall

People who have a strong sense of adventure can complete a hike through the jungle to visit this impressive waterfall. The trek takes visitors across flowing streams and through the countryside and although the trail can be tricky at times the reward of seeing this remote and very pretty waterfall is more than worth it. the trail can only be completed on foot and it takes around two and a half hours each way, so it is best to start after breakfast to be sure of getting back to the town before dark.

Chedi Phra That Mae Yen (White Buddha)

This small temple is watched over by an impressive gigantic white Buddha statue that can be seen all over Pai. The temple and statue are located just two kilometres to the east of the town and a steep set of steps leads the way to the temple. Alternatively, it is possible to drive up the hill and part at the base of the temple. The views from the top of the temple and the white Buddha statue are among the best in Pai and the climb is best completed in early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day.

Pai Canyon

This is a great place to visit at sunset to gaze across the valleys and towards the distant mountains. Pai Canyon is located some eight kilometres from the town on the road to Chiang Mai and features enchanting narrow red ridges that drop down into valleys filled with pine trees. Entrance is free and it is best to arrive at least half an hour before sunset to secure a spot from which to watch the dying of the day.

WWII Memorial Bridge

This bridge is located close to Pai Canyon and was originally building by the Japanese during WWII. In addition to offering pretty river and countryside views, the bridge features plaques that provide interesting information about the development of Pai over the last few decades.

Chinese Village

People who wish to gain an insight into the lives of the Yunnanese hill tribes should take the time to explore this vibrant village that can be found on the way to Mae Yen Waterfall. During the high season this village is teeming with life and there is a small traditional Chinese temple to explore as well as several shops and a Chinese restaurant that provides visitors with pretty valley views while they dine.

We Left it All and Moved to Thailand

Check out our founder, Amanda Gedney's, packing list after her first week being in Thailand! Who knew that her adventure would lead her this far. She still agrees with these packing tips. For you new teachers out there, take some notes, and you'll be ready to zip up your backpack and hop on a plane in no time!

Well…we didn’t leave it all…Shawn and I did bring our REI backpacking backpacks and a handheld bag.

"How did we decide to move to Thailand?" you may ask. We both just graduated from college and haven't made it to enough countries yet. We knew we needed to go somewhere cheap, so our money could last us. We've always wanted to go to Asia and teaching English seemed like the best way to be able to stay the longest. We completed our 120 hour TEFL and bought a one way ticket to Thailand.

With regards to packing, I’m happy we didn’t bring more. It’s nice to say that we do not have any regrets about packing. We read various travel blogs beforehand about what to pack, but we didn’t find many that detailed the items not to pack. So we thought we would make this list for you and break it down by categories.

Toiletries:

Of course, moving to a different country and backpacking are two different stories, but it's understandable in both cases if you want to have the comfort of travel-sized toiletries. However, you don’t have to break a sweat when your Crest runs out, there are plenty of other options here (believe me you do not need another reason to sweat in this heat). I just purchased a large bottle of Colgate Whitening, which was 35 TBH at 7/11, which is the equivalent of $1 USD. All toiletries that you could miss from home are here. Yes, ladies tampons are rare and I brought months worth, but they are around in all grocery stores, but just not as much of a selection. Everything else you could need is here, including toothbrushes at every 7/11, deodorant, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. I happily bought my Dove shampoo and conditioner and Tesco and went along my way.

What we would suggest you to bring is sunscreen. It is widely available everywhere, but is very expensive! Even though sunscreen is expensive at home, this is one item that is actually more expensive here.

Medicine:

Shawn and my bags were 40% filled with our over the counter medicine. From Shawn's severe allergies to my acid reflux, we are quite the mess. Besides the 15 Epi Pens we brought, we also brought Zantac and so much Benadryl. There are pharmacies on almost every corner and have anything you could need. However, we haven't seen brand name medication yet, so bring the ones that you trust.

Clothing:

Bring the apparel you can't live without, but that's it! Everything else you can buy here and will want to buy here is 75% less than you would at home. However, shoes are very important. They have plenty of options here, but as sizes are different (especially if you have larger feet) use the extra room in your backpack for shoes. My Nikes and Tevas have been very reliable.

Electronics:

We bought a great travel adaptor from Amazon, which has usb ports and outlets for efficient charging sessions. We also bought this external battery, which has been very reliable for charging our phones while traveling. Of course, bring your camera and GoPro.

Surviving Songkran

Guest blog post alert! Check out one of our teacher alum, Kirsty Turner's, take on Songkran, the Thai New Year.

Unlike New Year in the Western world, Thai New Year lasts for a total of three days and is celebrated in the middle of April. While this occasion features a number of events such as visiting family, trips to the temple and the giving of gifts, for many people the main event is a massive street party where people throw water at each other.

In every city, town and village throughout Thailand people take to the streets during Songkran (the Thai name for this special occasion) and let off steam by hurling water at anyone they meet while laughing and greeting them warmly.

When I first experienced Songkran in Bangkok I was completely overwhelmed. Everywhere I went people flung buckets of icy water at me or sprayed me with hosepipes. Before I had even walked to the end of the street, both and I my belongings were soaked through. Despite the scorching hot day, I felt less than impressed as strangers repeatedly approached me and laughed as they doused me with water. The wetter I became to angrier I seemed to feel, and before long I had abandoned my plans and retreated to my apartment.

For the next couple of years I managed to avoid Songkran completely, choosing to stock up on supplies and spend the holiday relaxing at home. I had decided that Songkran simply wasn’t for me, until one year when a friend managed to persuade me to ditch my attitude and join in the fun.

As I battled my way through the crowds to our arranged meeting point at the top of Khaosan Road I wasn’t exactly feeling in the party mood. However, this time I was armed with a large water gun and ready to do battle.

My friend greeted me warmly and dragged me into the thickest part of the crowd. As we walked, the people passing by threw water at us and we responded by firing shots from our water pistols. As we weaved in and out of the crowd shooting water at people and chasing those who tried to get away, I suddenly realised I was having fun. The smiles and laughter of everyone around me were infectious, and the Thai people seemed genuinely pleased that I was joining in. Above all else, we had been given permission to behave like children, and the urge to forget our troubles and simply play was very strong.

Like it or loath it, there is no way of avoiding Songkran in the Land of Smiles, as it is enthusiastically celebrated everywhere in the country. It only happens once a year, and this is the perfect opportunity to interact and have fun with Thai people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Thai people great each other at this time of year by saying “sabai dee pii mai”, which means happy New Year. When someone greets you in this way, it is important to greet them back before squirting them with water or covering them in talcum powder.

10 Reasons to Teach English in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Here's our top 10 reasons why you should teach english in Chiang Mai, Thailand and you can see for yourself if it feels right for you. Chiang Mai, Thailand was voted as "Best City in Asia" by Travel and Leisure Magazine, three years in a row. It also came in third in the "World's Top 15 Cities." Each city is ranked on culture, food, friendliness, value, and many other factors.

 1. The Quality of Life

Services are very affordable, so you'll find yourself having extra time doing things you love, instead of laundry, cooking, and cleaning (unless you love those activities, go for it!).

2. It's Cheap

Teaching salaries in Chiang Mai do not boast as high of wages as say Korea or Japan, but the workload is much lower. The salary you make is more than enough to save or live a luxurious lifestyle. An entry level teaching job pays 30,000 baht a month about $950 USD. To put that in perspective, you can have a luxury condo with a 24 hr security guard, pool, and gym in a central location for $250 a month. You can live a lifestyle that you'd never thought you'd be able to.

3. The Convenience

Everything is at your fingertips in Chiang Mai! Thailand is considered a third world country, but when you step foot inside its cities you would never know. The city has extremely modern shopping malls with everything from ice skating rinks to kiosks where you can get a picture of your face printed on a pancake.

Paying for bills has never been easier. Every mall has the kiosks you need to pay your bills. In some cases, you can even pay your bills at 7-Eleven. Yes, 7/11! These convenience stores are a staple in Thailand. There are over 10,000 7-Elevens in Thailand.

4. Safety

Thailand is an extremely safe country. Of course any common sense related to traveling must be used here. More stories are told about people losing items and getting them returned in a generous way, over people actually getting things stolen. Thai people are some of the nicest in the world. Women are respected and the country is very accepting towards foreigners. It is also a popular country for solo female travelers.

5. Nature

IMG_8929.jpg
IMG_8782.jpg

Chiang Mai is a city surrounded by mountains. Waterfalls, viewpoints, and hot springs are all within reach from the city. Hop on your motorbike, grab a songthaew (red trucks used for mass transit), or call an Uber and you'll be in another world in 30 mins.

6. The Food Scene

IMG_2773.jpg

Not only does Chiang Mai have amazing Thai food, it also has incredibly high quality international food from all over the world. Many foreigners from different countries start restaurants which enable many of us to have special tastes in our new home away from home. Mexican food, Middle Eastern Food, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, and Italian are just some cuisines easily accessible.

IMG_8485.jpg

The city is also extremely vegan and vegetarian friendly. There are both Thai and Western restaurants dedicated soley to vegetarians and clean eating. Also, if you have any food allergies, they are very accepting of them.

7. The Markets

At any time of the day or night, 7 days a week, you will be able to find a market to explore. Instead of paying for overpriced produce at grocery stores, markets are gold minds of the freshest fruit and vegetables. You can buy 8 kilos of fresh fruit and veggies for $25.Markets also have fresh prepared food available. So many options!

There are also many shopping markets in Chiang Mai perfect for souvenirs and clothing.

8. Travel Opportunities

CNX, Chiang Mai International Airport, is only becoming more and more accessible to long-haul international travel. China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China boast very affordable flights to the East and West Coast of the USA. In the past it would be necessary to fly from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for all International flights, but now there are even more direct flight options.

Budget airlines, such a Air Asia and Thai Lion, make it very cheap and accessible to fly to top destinations in South East Asia including, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Laos. You can easily get anywhere in the whole world from Chiang Mai.

9. Affordable Health Care/ Health Services

Health services are very convenient in this country. If you are sick or injured, you do not go to a "doctor's office," you just go directly to the hospital, which are all open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Most hospitals have signs saying "If you've been waiting for 20 minutes, please notify us," which is an incredibly short time for any of us who have spent hours in western Emergency rooms. The hospitals are extremely clean and modern. As a foreigner when you walk into the hospital, they'll be sure to direct you to an English speaking doctor or nurse.

They handle everything at the hospital. In 3 hours it is possible to have seen 4 nurses, 2 doctors, had a flu test, blood test, received the results, and were given your antibiotics. All in one location, in two hours, and for $60USD (without insurance). Many schools provide insurance for the teachers, which is very helpful as it will cover basic visits.

10. The Expat Community

Chiang Mai attracts creative and driven people. So many people move to Chiang Mai to have the opportunity to pursue passions that they didn't have the time for in their home country. Due to the affordability of the city, they are able to pursue less lucrative side projects, the ones that make them the happiest. This leaves passionate happy people all around this city, excited about life. There's always events going on and you'll never be bored. The amount of options can even be overwhelming at times. You'll never feel alone in Chiang Mai, there is always someone with the same interests and story as you.
