Starting Salary at Private schools: 30,000 - 35,000 baht a month ($960-$1,120)

Apartment - One bedrooom with AC - 6,000-8,000 baht a month ( $192-$256 )

Utilities (Electric Bill) - around 1,000 baht a month ($30)

WIFI - very fast speed - 800 baht a month ($25)

Thai Food - about $1 for a meal 

Western Food - pizza, burgers, mexican food - range from $3-$10 a meal. If you spent $15 on a meal that means you had alcohol and a lot of food. 

Laundry Service (about $15 for 5 pounds of clothing - wash, dried, ironed, and folded)

Motorbike Rental about $70-$80 a month

Beer - $1.50 for a large bottle

TEFL:

2. DO I NEED A TEFL CERTIFICATION?

A TEFL Certification is required to teach in Thailand. The online course will prepare you for your teaching position. 

3. DO I NEED A TEACHING DEGREE TO TEACH IN THAILAND?

You do not need a Teaching degree from the US to get a teaching job in Thailand. You do need a TEFL, which will help prepare you for the experience.

4. DO I NEED ANY TEACHING EXPERIENCE? 

You do not. However, any experience with children will help you in your interview. 

5. DO I NEED A TEFL IF I HAVE MY TEACHING DEGREE?

Yes, you do. Schools in Chiang Mai require a TEFL even if you have an education degree in the US. You will have the opportunity to be paid more if you do have an education degree. 

6. WHY DO I NEED A BACHELOR'S DEGREE TO TEACH?

All teaching jobs in Chiang Mai require a Bachelor's Degree. Your degree can be in any subject area.

MEDICAL:

8. ARE THERE ANY REQUIRED VACCINATIONS FOR THAILAND?

There are not any required vaccinations to enter Thailand. However, you should consult a travel doctor in the US before arriving. The most common vaccinations are Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus. You can find more detailed information on the CDC website. 

TECHNOLOGY:

Thailand is very well connected with Internet. WIFI will be included in your first month accommodation.

TRANSPORTATION:

12. WILL SOMEONE BE THERE TO PICK ME UP AT THE AIRPORT?

Yes, someone will be there to pick you up at the airport with a sign with your name on it. 

13. WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?

The best time to arrive would be before the school year starts on May 1st. Please check our program arrival schedule to choose the best time for you. 

TEACHING:

15. WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE FOR TEACHING?

The dress code for men is long pants, close toed shoes and a button down top. Some schools allow short sleeves, while others require long sleeves and a tie. The dress code for women is modest tops, long dresses, skirts and long pants. Some schools do not allow females to wear pants. Do not overpack for the dress code, everything you need is here and will be much cheaper!

SAFETY:

16. IS THAILAND SAFE?

Yes, Thailand is a very safe country. Our teachers have said they feel safer here than even in their home cities in America. However, it is important to take the same safety precautions as you would traveling in any country. 

19. WHAT HOLIDAYS WILL I HAVE OFF?

Thailand has about 16 public holidays throughout the year as well as various other observance days. Teachers are usually pleased with the amount of time they get off of work in comparison to their home country.

COSTS:

20. WHAT'S THE COST OF LIVING LIKE IN THAILAND?

The cost of living in Thailand is very cheap. You can have a luxury apartment in the middle of the city for around $250 USD a month. Expect to spend no more than $70 USD a week depending on your lifestyle. 

21. CAN I SAVE MONEY TEACHING IN THAILAND?

Yes! Of course you can. Saving money, no matter where in the world, depends on your lifestyle. Many teachers also teach online and make USD$, which enables them to save and pay any student loans. 

22. WILL I HAVE A BANK ACCOUNT IN THAILAND?

Yes, you will. Once you have a teaching job, the school will help set you up with a bank account and debit card. You will be paid via direct deposit.

VISA: 

23. WHICH VISA SHOULD I ARRIVE WITH?

We suggest you get a two month tourist visa in your home city. That will give you plenty of time to settle in and start your teaching job. Once hired at a school, they will handle your paperwork and help you with the work permit visa process. Your work permit will last one year and is easily renewed year to year.
