American Dream, Thai Reality: Ownership & Opportunity Await

Ever dreamt of launching your own business in exotic Thailand, but felt limited by ownership restrictions? Well, hold onto your beach hats, because the Amity Treaty and Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) offer a refreshing wave of ownership and opportunity.

Ditch the 51% Thai Shareholder Rule: Under the Amity Treaty, American citizens can own 100% of a Thai company. You'll have complete control and decision-making power at your helm. All you need are a minimum of two American shareholders, with the option to include partners from other nationalities as long as Americans hold the majority.

Streamlined Success: Say goodbye to lengthy legal procedures! The Amity Treaty simplifies the process, eliminating unnecessary roadblocks. While the financial capital requirement might be slightly higher compared to standard Thai companies, our team at Settle in Abroad will be your guide every step of the way.

Your Amity Treaty Roadmap:

  1. Form your Thai company: Let's build a strong foundation for your business.

  2. Apply for Amity Treaty status: Secure your special rights through the US embassy.

  3. Obtain a foreign business certificate: The final key to unlock your entrepreneurial journey.

Aiming for Bigger Gains? The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has your back! They offer incredible incentives for ambitious businesses, particularly in targeted industries like software development. Imagine this: exceed 1.5 million baht in annual tech employee salaries and you'll be eligible to apply for BOI promotion, granting access to amazing benefits like tax breaks, additional foreign employee visas, and more!

The Playing Field Has Shifted: The Amity Treaty and BOI pave the way for American and international entrepreneurs to flourish in Thailand without sacrificing ownership or growth potential.

How to Enter Thailand in 2021

Hey friends, thanks for stopping by our channel. My name's Amanda Gedney, and I'm the founder and CEO of Settle in Abroad. Today, we're talking about what it takes to enter Thailand in 2021 as borders are still closed.

(00:20)

In the past couple months, there have been new visa options that may allow you to enter Thailand that you didn't even know about. So now many countries can get the 60 day tourist visa, the 45 day visa exemption. These are all possible and ways to enter Thailand with a little bit less paperwork. But first, let's talk about the process.

(00:42):

So, number one, you have to decide which visa that you want. Are you going to get a long-term visa from your home country and enter Thailand? Or are you going to get the short-term visa and then get the long-term visa in Thailand? So there's a few things you can think about. If the specific reason you're coming to Thailand is for, say retirement, you may want to get the retirement visa in America, because then you can get that retirement visa and be in Thailand for a year, and then extend that in the country and not worry about anything at all. However, there is a lot of paperwork you have to do on your end in your home country to get this visa, but we are able to help you throughout the entire process. So please schedule a consultation call with us and we can help you decide what your options are and maybe what might be the best situation for you.

(01:32):

Because you've been waiting to come to Thailand, and if you just want to get that visa and then sit on a beach for a year, that's great. We can help you with that. But if you don't want to get a long-term visa outside of Thailand because you want to just get Thailand quicker and do less paperwork, that's fine. Then the 45 day visa exemption or the 60 day tourist visa, may be for you if it's possible for your country. Not every country can get these tourist visas at the moment, but we can let you know what visa you can get so you can enter Thailand no matter what country you are from.

(02:06):

So you have your visa, you decided on your visa, great. Next step, book your flight. So you have to book a semi-commercial flight because there are not commercial flights yet. So be very careful when booking your flight, because you cannot just go on Skyscanner or Google Flights and just book any flight, because the ones online might actually not be the ones that are available. Because it's semi-commercial, it's still technically a repatriation flight. So say you are in America and you're flying from Los Angeles to Bangkok. So Qatar Airways is one example. The flight from LA to Doha is not a commercial flight, but the flight from Doha to Bangkok is. So you have to look at the flight numbers to see if that is an actual semi-commercial flight. And there's spreadsheets online from the Thai government that let you know the airlines that are flying out and of course, this is something we can help with as well.

(03:08):

So you got your visa, you booked your flight, now you need to book your quarantine. So Thailand requires that everyone does a 15 night quarantine when arriving. This quarantine, most of them are in Bangkok. There's a few options in Phuket and Pattaya, but they are quite expensive and it's most likely that your flight might be canceled. Because wherever your flight arrives in to Thailand, that's where you immediately have to quarantine. So most people are doing Bangkok because most flights are flying directly there and it's much more options. There's a quarantine for every budget. The lowest possible is starting at $1,000 per person. And one thing to know about the quarantine is that only if you're married and have children is when you can quarantine together. So two partners that are not married, unfortunately they will not be able to quarantine in the same room. And for families, depending on the quarantine, sometimes they require one parent with one kid, one parent with another kid in separate rooms.

(04:12):

However, there are some luxury quarantine options for families that have conjoining rooms, so that might be an option for you. So as well, we can help you book the quarantine. We've had many clients come through and move to Thailand, so we've gotten a lot of feedback and everyone has a different opinion about the quarantine, but mostly everyone is happy with it. The food's great and it was just two weeks and now they get to live their life in Thailand. So you need to book that quarantine directly with the hotel as well. Do not book it through Agoda or booking.com. You have to book it directly with the hotel because they have their own cancellation policies that are very important. And you do want to pick one with a flexible cancellation policy in case your flight gets canceled, in case something happens in the paperwork process, you don't want to lose all that money you paid for the quarantine.

(05:06):

So visa, you got your quarantine, your flight, and now some more paperwork. So the COE, the certificate of entry, so you need to show that you've booked your quarantine, that you've booked your flight and you have your visa and you have to upload it online. So first you get a pre-approval for the COE and that can come within 24 hours of you applying. And just be sure to do this on a business day, because it's most likely able to come faster. So you will be pre-approved and then you have to do the next COE, which could take up to five business days to be approved. So be sure to give yourself enough time. And in both COE's, you also have to provide COVID insurance covering 100,000 USD. So don't book any insurance that just covers 100,000 USD.

(06:00):

It has to specifically cover COVID. They want to see that it says covers COVID. And the government has a list of Thai companies that fit in this policy requirement and I would highly suggest using a Thai company so you don't have any issues. If you use a Thai company and they list it, the Thai insurance company will know exactly what you need and you won't have any problems. And we work with plenty of insurance providers that we can help you get the insurance that you need. That insurance is required that you have it for the length of your visa, so if you're entering on a 45 day visa exemption, you just need the COVID insurance for 45 days. But if you are entering on a one-year retirement visa, you would have to have that COVID insurance for the entire year. So that's a very important detail to be aware of. So yeah, all of this paperwork is required. The COE is very important.

(06:54):

And then once your COE is approved, the final step is 72 hours before your flight you have to get a COVID test and it's a very specific COVID test. We'll write the exact wording so you understand. If you get a different one than the exact wording that they want, then it will not be valid. So you have to be very careful and make sure that it's within the 72 hour window before your flight. Because if it's anything out of that, they're not going to let you board the plane. And you did all the work, all the paperwork before those 72 hours, the last thing is the COVID test and the Fit-to-Fly Certificate. And the Fit-to-Fly Certificate you can only get filled out after you have your COVID test result. And of course the COVID test result has to be negative. And for the Fit-to-Fly Certificate, it is pretty simple. There are doctors online. It's like a video call and some aren't even requiring the video call anymore. You just email someone, you give them your negative COVID test, they make the paper for you, and then that's your Fit-to-Fly Certificate.

(08:02):

So there are specific doctors online that are qualified to do this. And of course, this is something we can help with as well. Because at the end of the day, it is a lot of paperwork to enter Thailand right now and you want it done correctly the first time, because one slight detail off might make your COE not come in time, you might not be able to get on your flight and it will leave you frustrated. So if you work with us, we're here to make the process as calm and simple as possible, and to get your end goal to enter Thailand. That's the goal. There's a lot of paperwork in between that, but we'll get you to Thailand so you can enjoy your life and relax. So thanks so much for stopping by our channel, and I hope to see you next time. Remember if you're new, hit subscribe, give us a like, hit the bell to be notified every time we upload videos. And we'll see you again soon. Thank you.

Cooking an Easy Pad Thai with a Local in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Nancy, the owner of Siam Cooking School located in Pongnoi, a neighborhood just 10 minutes outside the ever popular Nimman area, has shared with us her special Pad Thai recipe. She’s owned this cooking school for 16 years and has loved cooking Thai food for all of her life.

Nancy’s Pad Thai Recipe for 2

Ingredients:

1 egg

1/4 cup of chopped garlic

1/4 cup of Tofu

1/4 cup of Vegetable or Soybean Oil

8 or 12 ounce package of rice noodles

1/4 cup pickled cabbage

1 cup of chicken breast

Pad Thai Sauce (1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup oyster sauce, 1/4 cup tamarind sauce, 1 table spoon sugar)

1 cup bean sprouts

1/4 cup of dried shrimp

1/2 cup of crushed peanuts

Amanda0309-72.JPG

The whole cooking process should take about 5 minutes. We are using fresh rice noodles in the video, so we suggest boiling store bought rice noodles before mixing in the pan.

1. First, put the oil in the plan and let simmer until hot.

2. Next, add tofu, stir for 30 seconds and then add chicken

3. Add garlic

4. Crack the egg in the pan, add picked cabbage, and dried shrimp

5. Add the noodles

6. Add the sauce

7. Mix the sauce, noodles and ingredients for about one minute

8. Your pad thai is cooked!

9. Finally, add bean sprouts, spring onion, and peanuts for garnish

We Have the Perfect Visa for you to Live in Thailand Long Term

We hope you're healthy and safe wherever you may be in this world.

Thailand has handled COVID-19 very well. There hasn’t been a new country wide case in the past two months. The private schools re-opened in early July and the International Schools just opened two weeks ago, on schedule. Life is back to "normal" in Thailand with everything being open besides the borders into the country.

The opening date of Thailand's borders is uncertain. We expect by the Spring of 2021 that regular tourists can hopefully be able to enter. If you’re interested in teaching English in Chiang Mai or other cities in Thailand in 2021, we are now starting to recruit for the May 2021-March 2022 school year. Check out our
Teach in Chiang Mai program or schedule a free consultation call with us here
We wanted to let you know that we have just launched our YouTube Channel. We will be releasing new videos every week. We will be talking about all it takes to relocate to Thailand. We will be sharing about how you can teach English in Thailand, work remotely, get long term visas, and set up your own company.

How to Pass the VIPKID Interview Process

VIPKID.jpg

Congratulations on passing your Demo Interview! If you missed our last post on helpful resources for the basic info section and demo, feel free to have a read here. Now for the next stages of the interview process.

These are the main rules they are grading you on when you apply to be a VIPKID teacher. Here’s a very helpful video explaining the entire interview process.

No.1: BE ON TIME

You may not think you will miss class, you may forget check your schedule while it is still new to you or you may be a few minutes late. However, an online class is only 25 minutes, so being late just a few minutes, means you likely won’t get through the class, and may receive a No Show record.

No.2: BE PROFESSIONAL

Ensure your background is clean, your lighting is excellent, and you have no issues with your IT connection. has no issues and provides your students with the most appropriate environment for them to learn effectively.

No.3: BE ACTIVE

You are going to teach young children in another country thousands miles away through a camera, it’s so important for you to keep high energy levels for every class to engage your students and bring an interesting lesson to your lovely students!

MOCK CLASS 1:

Now, on to Mock Class 1. You have to teach a lesson to a veteran VIPKID teacher. The teacher pretends to be a young student, while you teach them the class. Almost everyone does two mock classes, but if you do really well on your first one, you may not have to do another one! You will also need to choose if you would like to get certified as a Lower level teacher, Level 2-3 Certification or an upper level, 4-5. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to prepare for your interview. The proctor will know right away if you haven’t prepared the material well enough ahead of time. VIPKID’s teaching techniques are very specific and can be learned all on YouTube.

The best part of VIPKID is that you don’t have to lesson plan! The lessons are provided for you and each student is on their own pace in the curriculum. You have access to the slides before you teach, so in the beginning you’ll definitely want to look over them before getting in the classroom. The longer you teach, the more lessons you will teach and it will all get easier! It takes a bit of time for every teacher to get in their own specific teaching rhythm, so just be patient and it will all get easier!

Here are some helpful videos for the Level 2-3 Certification and the Level 4-5 Certification

MOCK CLASS 2:

Congratulations on passing Mock Class 1! Now onto Mock Class 2 where the most important aspect is showing off your new skills. Be sure to take the advice from any of the feedback you got from the veteran teacher. They expect you to take the feedback and implement into your teaching, so make sure you take it seriously!

Here are some helpful videos for your Mock Class 2. Level 2-3 Certification and Level 4-5 Certification.

TESOL CERTIFICATION:

VIPKID now requires all teachers to have a TESOL Certification as it is a requirement by the Chinese government. If you already have a TEFL or TESOL from another accredited company, that qualifies. They say it takes 10 hours to complete the certification, but most people get through it in 2-4 hours max.

Once you complete the TESOL, you’ll fill out your contract info and VIPKID does a background check on you, which takes a few days.

The whole hiring process takes a week to a week and a half. VIPKID prefers that you do it all quickly. Keep your momentum going and get hired quickly!

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

The VIPKID attendance policy is VERY STRICT. This is completely reasonable as it’s a job where you make your own hours, so if you open a slot, you are expected to be there. You are only allowed 6 “No Shows” per teaching contract. Your contract lasts 6 months. A “No Show” is given when you are more than 1 minute late to class. This is the worst class labeling because it goes on your record and you are required to pay for that class. You do not get paid, and you have to pay your base rate, which gets deducted from your monthly payment.

So long story short, AVOID NO SHOWS in all cases possible! VIPKID does understand that emergencies happen, so they have “soft cancellations” but those require doctor’s notes. Another finished class labeling that you want to avoid is “Teacher IT issue.” VIPKID has "firemen” which are their IT specialists there to help in case there are teacher or student IT issues in class. The best way to avoid IT issues is make sure your WIFI is at a fast speed and if there are any power outages or issues, to have your mobile hot spot ready. If you’ve never used your mobile hot spot before, it’s easy. You are able to use the data from your phone, to connect to your laptop. You don’t want to do this all the time, in case you don’t have much data on your phone, but it’s great for traveling and power outage situations. Here’s a quick video on using a hot spot for iPhone and Android.

AFTER YOU’RE HIRED:

The number one mistake that VIPKID teachers make, is missing their first class. VIPKID emails you A LOT throughout the interview process and when you’re a teacher, but they don’t email you when your classes get booked or anything like that. So make sure to check back often to see which slots got booked and download the VIPKID app. An alarm goes off 15 minutes before your class starts.

Good luck on your mock classes!

How to Have That Flexible Job You've Always Wanted

vipkid 2.png

Here’s a post from our CEO, Amanda, on how teaching online is an amazing opportunity to make money while you’re teaching in Thailand, trying to save money for your travels, paying your bills, or replacing a job that may have not given you the freedom you’ve always wanted. It truly is a flexible, rewarding and enjoyable way to make money.

VIPKID is an online teaching and education company. Their headquarters are located in Beijing. They have their own platform and app for Native English Speakers from the US or Canada to teach English one on to one to Chinese students ages 4-16. You must have a Bachelor’s Degree to be qualified for the position, but it can be in any subject. It is not imperative that you have teaching experience for this. If you have had any experience with kids, such as babysitting, being a camp counselor or tutoring, that is relevant enough to be hired. If you’re interested in signing up, please use my referral link and I’m more than happy to help you with the interview process.

I’ve been a VIPKID teacher for three and a half years now, and it is the best job I’ve ever had. It’s really the dream to make your own schedule and make some great money while being flexible. When I was teaching at a school in Thailand, I would come home and teach a few hours a night to just have money for my travel fund, which allowed me to go to New Zealand an Australia for a month, which was a very expensive trip that I’d never thought I’d be able to take in my entire life. I am grateful for VIPKID once again, now that the travel industry will be down for at least a few months, so I am able to have a better peace of mind in paying my bills and planning for the future.

There is no minimum amount of hours you need to teach per week. In the beginning, you will want to open as many hours as possible to start getting students to book you. VIPKID is hiring now and there are even more hours than usual because the students in China are home as their schools are closed.

PAYMENT:

Each class is 25 minutes long. You have the opportunity to make $18-$22 an hour depending on your experience. In the beginning, you will most likely teach a different student every time, but after a few weeks, you will start to get “regulars” booking you and it’s a rewarding way to watch the progression of your students. The way VIPKID breaks down the payment of their classes can be confusing, but I will explain it to you here.

You will be told your “base pay” after your first mock class. If you don’t have any teaching experience or a teaching degree, you will most likely have a base pay of “$8.50” If the class is finished “As Scheduled” this means that you didn’t have any IT issues or weren’t late to class, you are given another $1. So you are at $9.50. If you teach at least 45 classes in the month, you get another $1. So your final payment per class for the month would be $10.50. If you open slots “last minute,” which means less than 24 hours before the class start, you are awarded an extra $2! So you could potentially make $11.50 a class, so $23 an hour.

VIPKID’s system and platform is very easy to use, and they take care of all of this for you. You have the option to get paid weekly, biweekly, or monthly via direct deposit. It’s pretty amazing. They are never late on payments and it is all completely legitimate. You occasionally even get paid early.

TIMING:

All you need to do is open time slots and students book you. The hours work on the Chinese time zone, and the “peak” hours are 5pm-9pm so in EST time that’s 6am-11am. Now that the students are still home, there are more hours in the morning and throughout the day. You could technically teach 13 classes a day, 6.5 hours, if you stayed up all night, but that is definitely not the sustainable approach to teaching, but if you need to do it, you could! In the beginning, make sure not to schedule too many classes in a row because teaching for 25 minutes may not seem long, but it requires your complete focus, so it definitely gets exhausting. I never teach more than 5 in a row. I think 3 is the magic number, but times when I’m hustling I’ll do 4-5 in a row with an hour break and do another 2 or 3 in a row. The months I’ve made the most money, were the times I taught 7-10 classes a day. It really helped rack up the money fast. The amazing thing is you can always open a few slots, see how they book and then open more. Or open a lot all at once and check back often to see how they’re booking and close slots. It’s really amazing having the flexibility of making your schedule like this.

CLASSROOM SET UP:

VIPKID expects all their teachers to have a “classroom” set up. This looks different for every teacher. What they are looking for the most is that you have bright lighting. Especially during your interviews, this is very important. It is best to have an extra lamp on your desk or table. They want to make sure the students are able to clearly see you, as it is very important while learning a new language to be able to not only hear how the words are pronounced, but see as they’re spoken. You’re expected to have some sort of appropriate background, you could have a map of the world, a print out of the alphabet, or anything fun you can think of. They want to make sure your classroom is colorful and inviting to the student.

PROPS:

VIPKID expects that all teachers have props in their classroom. They want to see that you have a small whiteboard, some stuffed animals, puppets or anything else that may make the student smile and add to an interactive learning experience. It is very important to have props, be comfortable integrating them into the lesson and using them with excitement during your interviews.

TEACHING STYLE:

VIPKID has a very specific way on how they want their teachers to teach. They expect you to be VERY enthusiastic. This may be uncomfortable at first, but it is quite a fun learning process that may require you laughing at yourself a bit along the way. There are many amazing YouTube videos that help demonstrate the enthusiastic teaching style. VIPKID also has very specific “TPR” which is the body language that you must use when teaching certain aspects. These TPR moves are very important to learn before scheduling your interview. Here’s a great video that explains the teaching style.

INTERVIEW PROCESS:

The interview process is definitely tedious, but once it is complete, the job is very easy! I will break down the steps of the interview process. They have also made the process quicker and easier. You will have three interviews. The demo lesson, mock class one, and mock class two. Here are some YouTube videos that explain the hiring process in extreme detail.

DEMO:

For the demo lesson (the first interview) you have three options. We suggest the Smart Demo as it is the quickest and least time consuming option. There is a high success rate in passing when choosing to do the Smart Demo as well. Here are your three options below, so you can decide for yourself what may be best.

  1. Interview Live via the VIPKID platform with an employee at the headquarters in Beijing.

  2. Smart Demo - the shortest possible option, takes place on your Smartphone, you have to answer a quick 5 questions and you only need to record yourself teaching one slide. You have 2 ½ mins to teach it and you can re-record the video as many times as you’d like before submitting it.

  3. Recorded 5 minute demo - Teach a few slides and record yourself in the platform. This takes longer and has no benefit over the Smart Demo.

We hope you’ve been intrigued by the possibility of getting a very flexible remote job! Stay tuned for our next blog post this week about the detailed interview process. We will explain the necessary steps to pass all your interviews and become a VIPKID teacher! It is possible to get through the entire hiring process in a week to a week and a half.
