A Quieter Side of Bangkok: Where Long-Term Residents Settle

Published by Settle in Abroad – Your Relocation Experts in Thailand

In our last post, we explored the neighborhoods that attract remote workers and younger foreigners. Today, we’re shifting focus to a different side of the city — areas that many long-term residents and retirees in Bangkok find more comfortable for everyday living.

When you’re staying in Bangkok for the long run, priorities often change. Convenience still matters, but so do things like quiet streets, walkability, green space, and easy access to healthcare and daily services.

There are a few neighborhoods that consistently stand out for this kind of lifestyle.

Ari — A Relaxed Neighborhood Feel

Ari is often described as one of the most livable areas in Bangkok. It’s well connected by the BTS Skytrain, but it feels much calmer than the busier parts of Sukhumvit.

What many people don’t notice right away is what’s tucked inside the smaller streets:

  • Local cafés and bakeries

  • Quiet coffee shops perfect for slow mornings

  • A mix of traditional Thai restaurants and modern dining

Ari feels more like a neighborhood where people actually live day-to-day, rather than a place built around nightlife.

Lumphini — Green Space in the City Center

For those who want to stay central but live at a slower pace, the Lumphini area is a strong choice.

At the heart of it is Lumphini Park, the largest green space in central Bangkok. It offers:

  • Walking and jogging paths

  • Open space to relax away from traffic

  • A daily routine that feels calmer than the surrounding city

Living near Lumphini also means you’re close to:

  • Major hospitals

  • Public transportation (BTS and MRT)

  • Restaurants and essential services

It’s one of the few places in Bangkok where you can balance city life with a quieter environment.

Phrom Phong (Residential Sois) — Central but Calm

Phrom Phong is often known for its shopping malls, but many long-term residents prefer the residential streets just behind Sukhumvit Road.

These smaller side streets, or sois, offer a different experience:

  • Walkable access to supermarkets and pharmacies

  • International grocery stores nearby

  • Easy access to the BTS

  • A quieter and more residential atmosphere

You’ll also find Benchasiri Park, which adds a green space for:

  • Walking and running

  • Yoga and outdoor exercise

  • Everyday relaxation

It’s a good example of how central Bangkok can still feel livable and calm with the right location.

An Insider Tip for Long-Term Living

One thing many long-term residents discover over time is that the best places to live in Bangkok are often not directly on the main roads.

Condos located a few streets inside the smaller sois tend to offer:

  • Less noise and traffic

  • More greenery

  • Better overall value

It’s a small detail, but it can make a big difference in your day-to-day life.

Finding the Right Balance

Bangkok has a wide range of neighborhoods, and finding the right one depends on how you want your daily life to feel.

If you’re planning to stay long-term, choosing an area that offers comfort, convenience, and a slower pace can make all the difference.
